 | The 59th Russian Chess Championship Superfinal ended on 15 December 2006. Evgeny Alekseev and Dmitry Jakovenko shared the first place with 7.5 points in 11 games.
The fate of the champion's title was decided on tiebreak. Two rapid games were played, with the time control 15 minutes + 10 seconds per move. Evgeny Alekseev, young grandmaster from St. Petersburg, won 1.5-0.5. |

The Russian Women's Superfinal ended on December 12 in Gorodets, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. This was a 15th category all-play-all event with 12 participants.
All the three title contenders lost their final round games: Ekaterina Korbut lost to Elena Tairova, Nadezhda Kosintseva was beaten by Ekaterina Kovalevskaya, and Tatiana Kosintseva was defeated by Valentina Gunina.

Thus, Ekaterina Korbut won the tournament, having scored 8 points in 11
rounds with only two draws. Kosintseva sisters, who shared the second
place before the last round, were caught up by Elena Tairova. These
three players collected 7.5 points each.

The six-game match between the World Chess Champion
Grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik (RUS) and the tenth version of computer
program Fritz started in Bonn (Germany) on Saturday 25 Nov 2006.
Vladimir Kramnik needed a win in the last game in order to draw the match, so after 1.e4 he, instead of 1...e5, selected a double-edged Sicilian defense. This resulted in a highly exciting game. Both sides displayed some fine maneuvering, and penetrated deeply into the core of the position, making the encounter worthy of a world championship match.

Alas, the computer depth surpassed the human one - Deep
Fritz managed to parry all the opponent's threats and grabbed a pawn
without any compensation, after which White's victory became just a
matter of time... The final score of the match - 4-2 in the machine's
favor.
