 | The 59th Russian Chess Championship Superfinal ended on 15 December 2006. Evgeny Alekseev and Dmitry Jakovenko shared the first place with 7.5 points in 11 games.
The fate of the champion's title was decided on tiebreak. Two rapid games were played, with the time control 15 minutes + 10 seconds per move. Evgeny Alekseev, young grandmaster from St. Petersburg, won 1.5-0.5. |

Apart from Sergei Rublevsky, the champion of 2005, the tournament was attended by Peter Svidler, Dmitry Jakovenko, Evgeniy Najer, Evgeny Alekseev, Ernesto Inarkiev, Nikita Vitiugov, Evgeny Tomashevsky, Denis Khismatullin, Sergey Grigoriants, and Ian Nepomniachtchi. Alexander Morozevich has withdrawn before the start of the tournament and was replaced by Ildar Khairullin.
For the first time such a number of so young players are taking part in a Russian Championship Superfinal. One of them managed to win the title. Dmitry Jakovenko finished second, Ernesto Inarkiev was third with 7 points, and Peter Svidler came up fourth with 6.5.
